Aricka Bueno
General Counselor
Being a counselor is more than a profession to me—it is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I am honored to walk alongside students during some of the most important and transformative moments of their lives, helping them recognize their strengths, navigate challenges, discover a sense of belonging, and feel empowered to pursue their goals. As a multicultural and multiethnic woman who identifies as Mexican American and Filipino American, my own experiences have deeply shaped the counselor I am today. Growing up, I often wrestled with questions of identity and belonging and experienced moments when I felt I was not “enough” of any one part of my heritage. These experiences taught me how deeply culture, identity, and belonging can influence a person’s emotional and educational journey—and the importance of having someone who listens without judgment and creates space for you to feel seen and understood. My educational experiences at the University of California, Davis and San Francisco State University further strengthened my passion for counseling, equity, and advocacy. Through my studies in Chicana/o Studies and multicultural counseling, I developed a deeper understanding of the experiences of historically marginalized communities and the ways systemic inequities can affect educational opportunities and well-being. My graduate training reinforced my belief that effective counseling begins with genuine curiosity, cultural humility, self-awareness, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with students from diverse racial, cultural, socioeconomic, linguistic, religious, gender, and ability backgrounds. I believe every student brings a unique story, perspective, and set of strengths to the counseling relationship. I approach each student with compassion, respect, and an open mind, recognizing that there is no single path to success or single story that defines who a student is or who they can become. I believe students thrive when they feel safe to bring their authentic selves into educational spaces. What I value most about being a counselor is witnessing growth—seeing a student begin to believe in themselves, recognize that they belong, gain confidence in their abilities, or take a step toward a future they once believed was out of reach. My personal and professional experiences have taught me that representation, encouragement, and intentional inclusion matter. I strive to help students recognize that their identities, experiences, and perspectives are strengths, not barriers to their success. I am grateful to do work that aligns so closely with my values of empathy, equity, advocacy, and inclusion. Ultimately, I love being a counselor because I have the opportunity to help students see possibilities in themselves and their futures and to create counseling spaces where every student feels respected, empowered, and worthy of the opportunities available to them.
Cindy Mata
My name is Cindy Mata. I am a part-time counselor at Cañada College. I’ve worked in general counseling, EOPS, and I’ve taught career courses. I started my educational career at community college where I earned an Associate’s degree, I went on to get a Bachelor’s degree in both Psychology and Sociology, and ultimately, I received a Master’s degree in Counseling with concentrations in College, Career, and Marriage, Child and Family Counseling from San Francisco State University. I was the first college graduate in my family. I truly believe in the power of education. I especially love community college; it’s a transformative place where one can change his/her life. Dega Teclemariam
Adjunct Counselor
Welcome! My name is Dega. I’ve had the privilege of working with Cañada College since 2016 as an adjunct counselor and instructor in General Counseling, EOPS, Promise, and Project Change. I also currently support students at Oakland City College and San Francisco City College. Originally from upstate New York, I’m a first-generation college student and know firsthand that the college journey can be both exciting and overwhelming. I earned my B.A. in Sociology from the University at Buffalo and my M.A. in Counseling from Sonoma State University. My original plan was to become a therapist—but the universe had other plans! During my summer internship in Sonoma State’s EOP office, I discovered how much I enjoyed helping college students' problem-solve, navigate the college maze, and turn “I have no idea what I’m doing” into a plan. As someone who went straight to a four-year university after high school because it was expected of me, I often think, “If I knew then what I know now, I would have made the same wise decision you did and started at a community college!” Yes, clap for yourself! I’m passionate about helping students find a path that works for them. Outside of counseling, I’m a self-care and wellness advocate and teach hot yoga in Oakland near Lake Merritt on Saturdays. Stop by sometime, take a breather, and remember that taking care of yourself is part of the journey, too!
Dr. Kassie Alexander
Promise Scholars Program Counselor
I was born and raised in Oakland, California, and began my college journey at Chabot College as a first-generation, low-income student parent in the Daraja Program, now Umoja. I earned my Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Social and Behavioral Sciences before continuing my education at California State University, East Bay, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master of Social Work. I later earned my Doctorate in International and Multicultural Education with a concentration in Human Rights and a minor in Organization and Leadership from the University of San Francisco. I currently serve as the Promise Scholars Counselor at Cañada College. Throughout my community college career, I have served in General Counseling, First Year Experience, Middle College, and Umoja, where I spent much of my career as a Counselor and Program Coordinator. My work is grounded in the Ethic of Love, which guides how I build authentic relationships and create humanizing, student-centered experiences. Because my own educational journey was shaped by equity-focused programs and educators who believed in me, I have dedicated my career to supporting first-generation, low-income students and students of color. I remain deeply committed to creating spaces where students feel seen, supported, valued, and empowered to achieve their educational goals.
Fay Faridnia
General Counselor
Fay grew up in Shiraz, Iran, and immigrated to the U.S. over 25 years ago. She holds a bachelor's degree in social work from Kerman University, an Associate of Science degree in Child Development from De Anza College, and a Master's in Education from San José State University. Fay has over ten years of experience as a community college counselor, supporting students in General Counseling, EOPS, TRIO, International, Promise, College of Working Adult and Math Performance Success (MPS) programs at De Anza, Los Medanos, Chabot, Foothill and West Valley Colleges. Her counseling philosophy is student-centered and solution focused. Fay is passionate about creating engaging and enjoyable sessions that help students discover their strengths and reach their academic, career, and personal goals. Jenna French
I have been the Learning Disability Specialist/DRC Counselor at Cañada College since July 2015. I possess a BA in Art History with a minor in Education from UCSC, MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from SFSU, and I earned the Adult Learning Disabilities certificate from Sacramento State University in 2015. I experienced the most thrilling accomplishment of my life in June, 2013. I earned my Masters from the San Francisco State University in Rehabilitation Counseling. I accomplished this in spite of being diagnosed with a learning disability (LD) in third grade. Throughout my life, I was continuously told my disability could keep me from being a successful student. Contrary to what I was told, this setback has been the very source of motivation for me to strive for academic excellence. Overcoming my own barriers and obstacles to academic achievement has provided me with a foundation upon which I could readily help others. I feel strongly drawn to a career in counseling, assessing students for LDs, identifying barriers, and find strategies to meet these challenges. I help students set up disability accommodations and teach them study strategies. I want students to understand how their brain process information and give them strategies/tools to use when learning.
Jessica Linares Boyle
Hi! I’m Dr. Jessica Linares Boyle, a part-time counselor in the Promise Scholars Program at Cañada College. I’m a proud Cañada alumna, first-generation college graduate, and former EOPS, CalWORKs, and TRIO student. My experiences, along with my background in counseling, criminal justice, and nonprofit leadership have shaped my passion for empowering students to advocate for themselves and create meaningful futures. Jinmei Lun
International Student Counselor
Welcome! My name is Jinmei Lun, and I am honored to serve as an international student counselor at Cañada College. With over a decade of experience across California's higher education system—including roles at Ohlone College, Chabot College, and San Jose State University—I am dedicated to helping students navigate their academic journeys and unlock their full potential. My passion for supporting international students comes from my own lived experience. As a new immigrant, I began my educational path at a community college, earning an A.A. in Social Science from Ohlone College before transferring to UC Berkeley for my B.A. in Psychology. I later completed my M.A. in Education Counseling and Student Personnel at San Jose State University. Drawing on both my personal journey and professional background, I am committed to guiding and empowering our students to reach their goals at Cañada College and beyond. Jose Manzo
EOPS Counselor
Originally from Eureka, California (Humboldt County), I spent my summers working 60-hour weeks as a sawmill laborer to put myself through college. That grind motivated me to pursue an education in the Bay Area, where I became the first in my family’s history to attend college, completing both my bachelor's in psychology and master's in counseling at San Jose State University. Since 2019, I’ve served as an adjunct counselor at Chabot and Mission Colleges, and I’ve been proud to be part of the Cañada College community as an EOPS counselor and instructor since Fall 2021. My driving motivation in counseling and teaching is simple: to help students seize the opportunity to make their dreams a reality. Having walked that path myself, I’m here to make sure you build navigational capital. Whether you need guidance on your academic pathway or career opportunities, my door is always open to any conversation; just reach out!
Lorraine Barrales-Ramirez
Welcome to Cañada College! I grew up in Redwood City and graduated from Menlo-Atherton High School. As a first generation college student and the daughter of Mexican immigrants, I had challenges along the way. Like many of you, I started my journey at a community college undecided about my major. I ended up earning an Associate’s Degree in Spanish and transferred to Cal State Fullerton where I completed a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business. After a few years working in various educational and non-profit organizations, I found my calling to pursue a career in counseling. I returned to school where I earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Notre Dame de Namur University and a Master’s Degree in Educational Counseling from San Jose State University. Since 2008 I have been the EOPS/CARE/FFYI Counselor and Coordinator at Cañada College. We assist low-income, educationally disadvantaged students pursue a college education. Every day, I look forward to working with students in helping them achieve their educational and career aspirations.
Margarita Baez
Adjunct Counselor/Instructor
Hola! My name is Margarita Baez, and I am an adjunct counselor at Cañada College, primarily serving students during the summer. My connection to Cañada began in 2003, and over the years I have had the opportunity to experience the college as a student, alumna, and employee in various roles. I grew up in East Palo Alto and graduated from Redwood Continuation High School before beginning my college journey at Cañada. I later transferred to San José State University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree, and continued my education at Notre Dame de Namur University, where I earned my master’s degree. I am bilingual in English and Spanish and enjoy supporting students from diverse backgrounds. As a former Cañada student, it is especially meaningful to return and help students navigate their own paths. I hope my journey reminds students that everyone’s story looks different, and with support, persistence, and the right resources, their goals are possible.
Nadya Sigona
My name is Nadya Sigona. I am thrilled to be a counselor here at Cañada College. I enjoy working with students to encourage them to pursue their dream careers and to help them overcome the obstacles along the way. I obtained my Masters in Counseling Education from San Jose State University. Prior to that I received a Masters in Human Resources from Golden Gate University and I also worked counseling adults in the workplace. I can't wait to meet you! Nicholas Martin
General Counselor & Instructor
My name is Nicholas Martin, and I am a General Counselor and Instructor at Cañada College. I feel privileged and honored to work with our outstanding students, faculty, and staff every day in a variety of capacities. Helping students achieve their academic, career, and personal goals is one of the most rewarding aspects of my profession. One of my primary areas of expertise is supporting our veteran student population—a growing community that deserves exceptional guidance and advocacy as they navigate higher education and the transition to civilian life. I am passionate about helping veterans maximize their educational benefits and successfully achieve their academic and career aspirations. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is serving as the Athletic Counselor for Cañada College's student-athletes. I am passionate about helping student-athletes successfully balance the demands of academics and athletics while preparing for transfer and long-term career success. Watching our student-athletes grow both in the classroom and in their respective sports is one of the most fulfilling parts of my career. Robert Haick
Greetings! I came to Cañada in 2004. Before I came to Cañada, I honed many of my skills over the years in such capacities as a Regional Restaurant Manager, Elementary School Teacher, Regional Manager of Training and Development for Kinko’s Southern California, and as a successful entrepreneur of a tech business. In addition, I hold a Bachelor’s Degree, Teaching Credential, and Masters in Counseling. In 2005, I became the Director of the Career Center at Cañada and retired from this position in 2026. I currently am an adjunct professor and feel my past and present experience prepares me well to help students along their college/career journey.

Sandra Mendez
For the past 10 years I have been tutoring, mentoring and counseling individuals through the many transitions of school and life. I started by volunteering my time and before I knew it, community college counseling had become my profession. It is a profession that I am very fortunate to say I love. I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from UC Berkeley. I obtained a Master's degree in Counseling from Saint Mary's College of California. I have lived and worked all over the bay area and through all my experiences I have learned that I have enjoyed working with people and finding out what inspires them. Sandra Rodrigues
Hi! My name is Sandra Rodrigues, and I am the academic counselor for the MESA Program at Cañada College. I have been at Cañada for fourteen years and have spent the past twelve years working in the STEM Center, supporting students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and math. I truly enjoy helping students explore transfer options, develop an individualized academic path that supports their educational and career goals, and navigate the transfer process. Most of all, I enjoy getting to know my students and supporting them in any way I can as they work toward academic success and transfer. Hello! Welcome to Cañada College. My name is Sarah Aranyakul, I have been a counselor here since March 2012. Prior to working at Cañada College, I was a counselor at City College of San Francisco for six years and Gavilan College for four years. I received my AS in Business Administration from Cañada College, BS in Management from Golden Gate University and MA in Counseling from Santa Clara University. As an immigrant and first generation college graduate, I value education and believe in working hard. I am committed to serving students to the best of my ability.
