Tuition Reimbursement

Eligibility

Permanent employees who have completed their probationary period are eligible to receive up to $1,400 in tuition reimbursement per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Applications must also meet the following requirements:

  • Coursework must be related to professional development (work-related skills and knowledge) or growth (advancing role within the institution), or part of a college degree program
  • Courses must be taken at an accredited institution
  • Applicant must receive a minimum grade of C in the course(s) receiving reimbursement
  • Reimbursement is for tuition only (books, meals, mileage, and related expenses are not included)
  • Applicants participating in the SMCCD Pilot Tuition Reimbursement program are not eligible for Cañada Tuition Reimbursement
  • Applicants are encouraged to discuss their long-term educational/professional development plans with supervisor(s)
  • Applicants who are on a wait list or whose registration is delayed need to apply in advance and notify the Director of Professional Development and Innovation upon registration. Additional documentation may be required (e.g. email confirmation from instructor).

Steps for Classified Employee Tuition Reimbursement

 

Before the class begins

The steps must be completed before the course begins or the application for tuition reimbursement will be denied:

Applications for Tuition Reimbursement will be reviewed using the Tuition Reimbursement Rubric. Applicants are encouraged to review the rubric for steps to be taken before the course begins and upon completion of the course. Applicants and supervisors will be notified of decisions by email. Tuition Reimbursement is based on the funds available and eligibility requirements, including submitting forms in the timeframes indicated; therefore, approval for reimbursement is not guaranteed.

After completing the course

Classified Employees approved for Tuition Reimbursement must complete the following steps within 30 days of completing the course:

  • Complete Request for Reimbursement form
  • Gather final grades (must be a C or better to receive tuition reimbursement)
  • Collect original payment documentation
  • Print confirmation email explaining the funds approved (provide for supervisor signature)
  • Secure appropriate signatures
  • Submit form, transcripts, and proof of payment to the Director of Professional Development and Innovation

Classified Tuition Reimbursement Application Review Process

The Classified Professional Development Work Group will review Application for Tuition Reimbursement using the Tuition Reimbursement Rubric within two weeks of receiving the application. Names and all identifying information will be removed from the application.

 

Applications will be reviewed if funds are available. If funds are no longer available, applicants will be notified via email.
