- you'd like to start getting up to speed while you wait for the next QOTL 1 cohort to start.
Course Objectives
After completing QOTL-E, you should be able to:
- Build organized courses for your students that utilize the essential functions of the Canvas LMS.
- Identify the essential services and resources available on your campus.
- Collaborate with your campus Instructional Designer for support whenever you might need it.

Quality Online Teaching & Learning 1 (QOTL 1)
The Quality Online Teaching & Learning Training, or QOTL, is an in-house certification program for SMCCCD faculty to learn how to teach online and/or hybrid courses. QOTL was first offered in the Summer of 2017 and will be offered three times each year--once during the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. The course is offered 100% online and the objectives of QOTL are outlined below.
At the completion of QOTL, participants will be able to:
- Design an accessible online or hybrid course in Canvas while applying the OEI Course Design Rubric.
- Assess new or existing course materials for accessibility and revise as needed.
- Construct a course that meets the needs of online or hybrid students, specifically in the area of Regular Effective Contact.

Quality Online Teaching & Learning 2 (QOTL 2)
About the Training
QOTL 2 is an advanced online teaching training that builds off of QOTL 1 and goes beyond the content in that course. The goal is to invite faculty to look at one of their existing courses and re-imagine any components that they feel could be improved upon and/or enhanced. And we want this training to fit the needs of our faculty, so we’ve designed it to be a Choose Your Own Adventure format. The course begins with a Module 0 that everyone completes, followed by the three modules that faculty participants get to choose, and concludes with a final activity.
Faculty participants get to choose which modules they work through based on the topics that they’d like to dive further into. They get to choose one module from each category to make up their own QOTL 2 Adventure. Here’s an outline of the topics faculty can choose from:
- Category A – Course Structure & Navigation (choose 1)
- Content Delivery
- Course Facilitation
- Visual Interest
- Category B - Interaction & Communication (choose 1)
- Student Interaction
- Instructor Interaction
- Honoring Student Voice
- Category C - Assessment (choose 1)
- Authentic Assessment
- Active Learning
- Grading & Feedback
