Honors Transfer Program (HTP)

The HTP supports the mission and values of Cañada College by:

  • Creating an environment of scholarship that nurtures motivated students.
  • Providing increased transfer opportunities and access to scholarships for participating students
  • Supporting faculty innovation in educational practices that lead to student success.

Honors Transfer Program (HTP) Mission

The Honors Transfer Program (HTP) is designed for highly motivated students whether they come

with strong academic skills or develop them along the way. HTP primarily serves students whose

educational goal is to transfer to a 4-year institution and complete a bachelor’s degree. Students

participate in challenging, academically rigorous learning experiences through classes, seminars,

conferences, and events. They become creators of knowledge via their research projects and

presentations. The opportunities to develop and share their academic research uplift student voices,

increase confidence, and better prepare students for university work. Completion of HTP also greatly

increases transfer and scholarship opportunities for students.

Background

The HTP was designed, in part, based on the National Collegiate Honors Council Basic Characteristics of a Fully Developed Honor Program – the national benchmark for college honors.

Undergraduate research is a "high impact educational practice." As described in Association of American Colleges and Universities materials, undergraduate research seeks to "connect key concepts and questions with students' early and active involvement in systematic investigation and research. The goal is to involve students with actively contested questions, empirical observation, cutting-edge technologies, and the sense of excitement that comes from working to answer important questions." http://www.aacu.org/leap/hip.cfm

HTP Program Learning Outcomes

Upon graduation and/or transfer from the Honors Transfer Program, students will have:

  1. Completed at least 15-units of Honors;
  2. Completed Honors research;
  3. Presented Honors research at Cañada College’s Honor Research Conference and/or the Bay Area Honors Consortium. 

Student Eligibility

To qualify for membership the Honors Transfer Program a student must:

  • Be eligible for English 100 and MATH 125, 130, 140, 200, 222, 241, or 251.
  • Have a high school GPA of at least 3.3 or a cumulative college GPA of 3.3 in at least 9 units of transferrable courses.

Completion of the Program

To complete the Program, students must complete a minimum of 15 units of honors course credit, and have a minimum 3.3 transfer GPA. A maximum of two courses can be Honors contracts.
