Summer Internships for Community College Students
The "Creating Opportunities for Minorities in Engineering, Technology,and Science" (COMETS) program is a collaboration between Cañada College's Engineering Department and San Francisco State University School of Engineering. The project was sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Education through Curriculum Improvement Partnership Award for the Integration of Research into the Undergraduate Curriculum (CIPAIR), Grant No. NNX10AU75G from October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2014. The program is currently funded by the US Department of Education through the Hispanic-Serving Institution Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (HSI STEM), Grant No. P031C110159.
Program Objectives
Objective 1. To improve student engagement and success in foundational math courses and core engineering courses;
Objective 2. To develop a summer research internship program for community college engineering students;
Objective 3. To improve academic success of engineering students from underrepresented groups by providing academic support and mentoring
Summer Internships for Community College Students
The 10-week COMETS Summer Internship Program will provide sixteen community college research internship positions. Participating students will be working with faculty from SFSU on NASA-themed research projects. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
Application Period: December 1, 2014 to February 15, 2015.
In order to complete the application, you will need the following information:
- Number of transferable units you expect to have completed by by June 2015.
- Your current cumulative GPA.
- A list of all the math, science, and engineering courses you will have completed by June 2015.
- A one-paragraph response to the following prompts:
a. Briefly describe your academic plan, career goals, and research interests.
b. Briefly describe why you want to participate in the COMETS Summer Internship Program.
c. List skills, training, and experience you have that will be useful in an engineering research internship position. - Contact information (phone number and email) of an instructor who will complete a Letter of Recommendation on your behalf.
