New Students

 

Complete the Alternate Placement Form available at the Welcome Center (Building 9 - First Floor) to determine which classes are right for you.

If you wish to enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, you will need to take the ESL Assessment.  Call the Welcome Center (650-306-3452) to make an appointment to take the ESL Assessment Test.

Note: You must have received a student ID number (G#) before completing the form or taking the Assessment Test.

 Alternate Placement Form or Math and/or English Assessment Test must be completed if:

  • Student is enrolling in English, reading and/or mathematics
  • Student is enrolling in classes with an English, reading or mathematics Prerequisite or Recommendation level
  • Student is planning to transfer or earn an associate degree or a career-tech certificate
  • An Alternate Placement Form or assessment is required for all new, non-exempt students

You are automatically EXEMPT from completing the form and from taking the Assessment if:

  • You can show evidence of completing the College Board Advanced Placement Test (AP) in English Language or in English Literature with a score of 3, 4, or 5.
  • You can show evidence of completing the College Board Advanced Placement Test (AP) in Mathematics with a score of 3, 4, or 5.
  • You can show evidence of completing the CAASPP exam (formerly Early Assessment Program EAP) for Math and/or English. Your results may not be Conditional.
  • You can show evidence of completing an IB Language A1/English HL. A score of 4 or higher is required.
  • You can show evidence of completing an IB Math HL.  A score of 4 or higher is required.
  • You have taken an assessment at another community college. Attach a copy of your Assessment Recommendation. The math assessment must have been taken within the last two years.
