Add images to a webpage with OmniUpdate

Format types

Images can be photos or illustrations. If they are photos, they should be in .jpg format. If they are drawings or illustrations which do not have the same gradations of color that photos do, they must be in .png or .gif format. Otherwise they will have poor resolution.

File sizes and image sizes

Images can be really large files (MB range). For the web, image files should be 100 kB - 200 kB at most. Otherwise they are slow and problematic to display, especially for users with a slower internet connection, older computer, etc.

The image width and height must be sized appropriately for the web page. Images need to be less than 650 pixels in width. The height is less important, but it is difficult to view an image more than 650 pixels in height without zooming out the browser. OmniUpdate Campus has limited photo editing capability (see below). If you need help optimizing your images for the web, please contact Roberta Chock,

Customize Your Department Site

You may customize the rotating slide show at the top of your department page with images specific to your department. Those images are 515 x 174 pixels, and approximately 30kb each. These images go in 'images' > 'slideshow' folder.

Legal Use of Images

Whatever images you use, make sure you have the legal right to use them. Don't copy something from the web and use it without the proper permission. There are many companies that sell images - search for 'stock images'. See also Use of Photography.

Uploading images from your computer

Displaying images on your website is a two-step process.

  1. First upload the image from your computer to OmniUpdate. Learn how to upload files here.
  2. Then place it in the webpage.

Placing images in the webpage

Go to the page you want the image in, insert your cursor at the spot where you want the image, and click on the ‘Insert/Edit Image’ button:

A window opens. Click on the Browse button to find the uploaded image:

Click on the appropriate directory and then click the filename so that it is bolded. Click on ‘Select File’:

The filename appears in the 'Image URL' box. Provide an Image Description that will communicate the meaning or function of the image for people accessing the page using screen readers or equipment for the vision impaired. Keep this short - less than 100 characters. There is no need to say 'image of...", "picture of...", or "link to..." if the image serves as a link. If your image includes text, the Image Description should include the same text.

Type in the Image Description box and click the 'Insert' button:

The image appears in the webpage:

To edit the image again, in Edit mode, click to highlight it, then click the ‘Insert/Edit Image’ button:

In this window there is also an ‘Appearance’ tab to select:

If desired, adjust the alignment of the image here:

You can also change the image dimensions. In general, keep the ‘constrain proportions’ box checked to avoid image distortion. Edit the first number, click 'tab' on the keyboard, and the second number will be automatically constrained:

Click ‘Update’. Then save the page and publish as usual.
