SparkPoint at Cañada

The SparkPoint Cañada College Center is a one-stop financial education center where students and community members can access a full range of free services to achieve financial self-sufficiency.

In San Mateo County, home to some of the most affluent neighborhoods in California, one-fifth of the county’s population struggles to make ends meet. A better life through higher education is too often out of reach. To better serve these individuals and their families, Cañada College became the second college in California to host a SparkPoint Center.

SparkPoint Cañada College Center is part of a regional United Way of the Bay Area network of financial education centers designed to serve individuals and families who are working to achieve financial self-sufficiency. The program is modeled after Annie E. Casey Foundation's "Center for Working Families  ." Services and resources are bundled and sequenced to improve outcomes.

SparkPoint Clients work one-on-one with a financial coach to create a financial plan to improve financial behaviors which may include:

  • Organize financial documents
  • Create a spending tracker
  • Draft a budget
  • Review credit reports
  • Improve credit scores
  • Open a secured credit card
  • Open a low-cost bank account
  • Set up direct deposit
  • Use on-line banking
  • Set up a recurring bill payment
  • Increase savings
  • Pay down debt
  • Access benefits and other resources
