Our Mentors




Isis Lemus
Isis is in her third year in Cañada and plans to transfer within a year to a university in California to pursue a degree in Anthropology. Isis chose to study this field because she likes learning more about people and working with others. She is deciding what specific career to pursue but she definitely knows she want to help people. Isis has lived in Redwood City her whole life and hopes to be able to buy a house someday in the area. Isis studied abroad in London last Fall and found a new passion in life: traveling. After finishing school, she wants to travel around the world and explore other cultures and places. 


Anthony Guttierrez
Anthony was born in El Salvador, moved to CA when he was 11 and has been here ever since. He plans to obtain an AA in Communications to transfer to Sonoma State or UCSB. He loves to travel! He has been to Puerto Rico, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Texas. He says Puerto Rico is by far his favorite! Anthony chose Cañada College because he feels like he knows everyone. It is like a family where everyone knows each other, either by a direct connection or by having people in common. Anthony loves living in Redwood City because it’s the community that saw him grow up. As a mentor he wants to give back to the community that helped shaped who he is.

Madee Reyes
Madee graduated from Menlo-Atherton High School and lives in East Palo Alto. After attending several long orientations at different schools, Cañada College was her final choice. Cañada’s close knit community has helped Madee work hard and succeed in her classes as she explores different career paths. Her goal is to equip herself with the tools to help people in her community and beyond alongside the ¡ESO! Adelante and Outreach Team. She also enjoys club activities and is an active member in Cañada’s Glee Club, InterVarsity, Dreamers Club and the Adelante Club.

Sandra Serdan
Sandra was born and raised in México. Viva México! She is an ESL first generation student, and along the way has found many academic struggles but also resources that have helped her overcome them at Cañada College. She is currently pursuing a BioChemistry(STEM) major and strives to become the best neurosurgeon she can be. Her lifetime goal is to build a free-clinic back in her hometown to provide free health care to people that don't have access. At Cañada, Sandra tutors, mentors and assists students with their academic goals. She also helps students build their confidence, and self-esteem, and to think beyond and outside the box. In her free- time, she enjoys dancing, eating tacos and pizza, and watching Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds or The Office. If you are reading this, she wants  you to know, , "Remember you can do it! NEVER GIVE UP. Si se suede raza!" 
Vanessa Giraldo Ruiz
Vanessa was born in Medellin, Colombia and moved to the United States 3 years ago. She is an international student and started as an ESL Student at Cañada College. Currently, Vanessa is in her second year and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Interior Design. Studying abroad has been her dream since she was 17 years old. Vanessa found in Cañada the right place to pursue higher education. Her family, the college staff, classmates, and professors support have been a key moving forward in her academic goals. As a peer mentor, she wants to help other students succeed in their academic path and give back to the college that as welcomed her since the beginning. Vanessa loves traveling and learning different cultures. She also likes to cook and meet with her family and friends. She believes that dreams are bigger than anything, and with hard work, responsibility, and commitment we can achieve them!





Luis Mendez

Luis is a student majoring in Business and Economics at Cañada College since the Fall of 2016. He is the third out of four siblings and he is the only one currently studying abroad. During high school, he was able to learn many languages including French, English, and Portuguese and was just another average student who failed 10th grade. In the Fall of 2016, he decided that Cañada College was the best fit for him to pursue his dream of studying abroad. During the Fall of 2017, he became the Student Body President and a new International Student Ambassador. He is currently the Student Body President, an International Student Ambassador, the Vice-President of Fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa, and he tutors economics, accounting and statistics at the Learning Center. When he is not in a meeting or at work, he spends time playing soccer, basketball, and tennis with his friends. Additionally, he likes to enjoy trying new dishes from different parts of the world and he appreciates the time spent with family and friends. He is currently trying to learn different languages such as Arabic and Mandarin and trying to be a mentor for all students from Latin America.
