Welcome!

Welcome to the Early Childhood Education/Child Development Department (ECE/CD) at Cañada College. This is a department and program for individuals interested in a career or currently working with young children (birth to approximately 8 years old) and families, in formal and informal, in school and after school, early care and education settings.

The mission of the Department is to provide students with relevant and engaging educational experiences coursework in ECE/CD. With an emphasis on the importance of nurturing the “whole child”, students in our program will develop the skills and teaching dispositions to prepare children for future school success. Students receive support to succeed in ECE/CD courses as well as facilitating their educational goals like certificate, transfer to a Bachelor degree program, and career advancement.

The Department is a community based program. We collaborate with other agencies and organizations in San Mateo County to support the expansion and supply of qualified early education professionals through supporting educational opportunities that facilitate career entry and ongoing professional growth.  Furthermore, the ECE/CD Department faculty are engaged scholars and community leaders with experience in human development, special needs and early education curriculum. Their insight provides contextualized and applied, career and technical information to students as they explore the field of early education.

Program Learning Outcomes:

Students completing this program will be able to:

  • Communicate their understanding of Early Childhood Education/Child Development concepts professionally through written, oral and visual presentations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of early childhood education theories and trends and of the needs of young children by developing and maintaining healthy, safe, respectful, challenging and culturally responsive learning environments.
  • View themselves as an early childhood education professional and, through the practice of reflection, critically assess their own teaching experiences to continuously guide and inform their practice.
