Openings: Wildlife Research Intern

The Wildlife Research and Conservation program gives wildlife enthusiasts, volunteers, students, scientists and interns of all ages and backgrounds an opportunity to get involved in conservation, research and wildlife management. Participants spend five days per week assisting in various capacities of research and wildlife conservation. Assistance is given through field work (data collection, behavior observations, trail camera deployment), entering and analyzing data, maintaining trail cameras and analyzing their photos. We leave evenings and weekends open which allows the chance to explore South Africa and take part in various cultural and tourist activities. Based in the beautiful coastal town of Hartenbos, South Africa our participants have a unique experience of working hands on in conservation on a free roaming wildlife reserve while living within walking distance to our pristine blue flag beaches.
Operating with the embodiment of Nkonzo Wildlife ideals and goals, the mantra of “Educate Act Empower” is nowhere more evident than in the Wildlife Research and Conservation Program. Participants are assisting in critical hands on research and conservation initiatives in the field that impact the wildlife and environment in both short and long term goals and solutions. These two areas, Educate and Act, work together to foster and facilitate the most important aspect of these ideals, to Empower. Through hands-on initiatives and education one leaves Nkonzo Wildlife with a better understanding of the problems plaguing African wildlife, the efforts being made to assuage these issues, and how they can continue to work with conservation and make a change for the better of wildlife, ecosystems, and our planet.

The VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21) is one of 18 Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs) in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The Network serves Veterans in northern and central California, Nevada, Hawaii, the Philippines and U.S. Territories in the Pacific Basin. With a total of 67 sites of care, VISN 21 provides a continuum of comprehensive health care services through seven VA Medical Centers, nine co-located Community Living Centers and 41 Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).

VISN 21 is remarkable in several ways – one of which is its academic affiliations. All seven VISN 21 health care systems have highly successful clinical affiliations with prestigious universities in the areas of medicine, nursing and allied health professions. VISN 21 hosts the largest number of Centers of Excellence in VHA, receives the most research funding in VHA, and has expansive and collaborative relationships with its Department of Defense partners. VISN 21 is on par nationally with inpatient and outpatient satisfaction measures, and often exceeds the VHA national average. VISN 21 has ranked number 4 among all VISNs for best places to work based on the most recent All Employee Survey.

VISN 21 is committed to ensuring that Veterans have full access to the highest quality of care, and that patients and staff alike have high levels of satisfaction. Currently we face one of the most challenging times in VA and must restore trust and faith in VA health care services. We are focusing on providing Veterans timely access to quality care and include virtual modalities, rural health outreach, non-VA care contracts, and collaborations with community and federal partners. Our efforts align with the recently passed Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act (VACAA) of 2014.

Children between the ages of 2 and 6 develop physical coordination, formulate and combine ideas, are able to learn more complex games, and begin the journey of learning about themselves and each other. Being playful while learning is the best way to help children to remember and later apply concepts they have learned. Play and performing arts are stitched throughout our daily activities. Foreign language is introduced and expanded upon throughout our preschool curriculum. Our teachers provide individual attention to support every child’s unique needs.

Our preschool curriculum allows our children to thrive and introduces language, math, science, and social skills in a way that encourages learning at every child’s own pace. Our children strengthen their cognitive and social skills with fun memory games and team activities which combine creative expression with a tactile experience in a group setting.

Math and science skills are developed with hands-on experiences and supported by elements of the performing arts. Language experiences are introduced with performing arts integration to support accelerated literacy and language development.

This year, Jobs for Youth is celebrating its 40th year of serving our beautifully diverse San Mateo County community and supporting underserved youth reach their full potential. We focus our primary efforts with youth who are between the ages of 14-21 and who live or study in San Mateo County.

The Jobs for Youth program has solidified its three pillars of success—providing career skills workshops, employment opportunities, and scholarships for postsecondary education. All workshops are built on the belief that the career journey is about more than getting a job: it’s about finding, and being, yourself. We teach our youth that the best way to figure out what you want to do is to figure out who you are.

During Jobs for Youth workshops, youth learn how to communicate more effectively, network, master the job application process, and interview effectively. All youth who register and attend any JFY workshop will become JFY Members and have access to our exclusive JFY job board. We maintain a FREE list of San Mateo County jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities for our youth. In addition to accessing our JFY job board page, all JFY Members are eligible to apply for a higher education scholarship.

The Al Teglia Scholarship program can help youth ages 16-21 on their journey toward earning an Associate degree, Bachelor’s degree, vocational training certificate, or whatever higher education looks like to them. The scholarship application will open on 11/1/22.

Workforce development has never been more crucial to the vitality of the Bay Area economy than it is right now. As we seek to revive from the impacts of covid, low- and middle-income workers -- and those with barriers to employment -- need immediate and impactful assistance to stave off the hazards of homelessness, poverty and desperation. Our economy needs skilled workers at all levels, and JobTrain is the anti-poverty workforce development organization behind this important work.

JobTrain is an organization on the move. We are delivering best in class outcomes, increasing our reach by expanding regionally, and we have committed to an ambitious new expanded mission to help our community to advance beyond the initial job placement, providing career advancement programming to help them achieve “full economic mobility.”

Born out of the civil rights movement in 1965, we’ve been servicing literally anyone and everyone who journeys through our doors at one of our (now) six, Bay Area career or training centers. We create an environment and workspace where our staff reflects the diversity of the communities we serve, fostering a safe and welcoming place for our clients. • to celebrate and support the relationship between family, school, and community;
• to support a child's development of self-esteem and acknowledge the leadership potential within each individual;
• to develop the ability to communicate with others and the interest in reaching out to others;
• to respect each other and the precious / fragile environment we have inherited and will offer to the future generations;
• to celebrate diversity with a commitment to peace and harmony in a just society;
• to each do what we can to make the world a better place;
• to facilitate and value each student as a lifelong learner and a resource to other learners.
