Maternity nursing theory, concepts and principles relevant to the nursing care of pregnant and postpartum women using a systems approach. Application of the nursing process to optimize patient and family outcomes.

N335 Maternity Nursing Practicum III (3 units)
Application of theoretical knowledge and technical skills in providing care to pregnant women, newborn infants and other family members in an acute care setting. Practicum.

N336 Pediatric Nursing Theory (3 units)
Pediatric nursing theory, family theory, concepts, and principles relevant to the nursing care of children using a systems approach. Application of the nursing process to optimize patient and family outcomes.

N337 Pediatric Nursing Practicum IV (3 units)
Application of theoretical knowledge and technical skills in providing care to acutely and chronically ill children in an acute care setting. Practicum.

N338 Nursing Research (3 units)
Principles of research theory, methodology, and critique. Understanding of the research process and its application in nursing. Role of the nurse as consumer of scientific research as applied to practice.
Note: Psy 200 – General Psychology is prerequisite to entering semester 4 courses.

N311 Health Assessment (3 units)
Strategies to obtain health history and physical assessment data for diverse populations across the life span. Health risk prevention and promotion of health behaviors. Communication, observation, inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation as assessment methods. Extra fee required.

N312 Foundations in Nursing Theory (3 Units)
Introduction to professional nursing, focusing on challenges influencing nursing education, nursing practice and healthcare. Concepts and principles of professional nursing practice: nursing process, communication, professional values/behaviors, and economic factors affecting nursing and healthcare.

N 313 Foundation in Nursing Practicum I (2 units)
Concepts, theories, and clinical skills fundamental to the practice of nursing. Students utilize the nursing process to plan and provide for the cultural, physiological, social, psychological, and spiritual needs of patients with chronic health problems.

N 314 Nursing Skills Lab (3 units)
Theories and principles from nursing, health assessment, and related sciences applied to fundamental and complex nursing skills, and nursing process. Laboratory includes demonstration, practice, and return demonstration. Extra fee required.

N 315 Pharmacology (3 units)
Principles of drug therapy across the lifespan with a focus on professional nursing responsibilities, including patient/family teaching. Drugs used in major disease classifications; common drug interactions.
Note: DFM 253 – Nutrition in Health and Disease is prerequisite to entering semester 2 courses.

SEMESTER 4 classes

N 444 Psych/Mental Health Nursing Theory (3 units)
Theories and principles of psychiatric nursing, as well as foundations of behavior, communication, and psychopharmacology, are emphasized. Acute and chronic mental health/illness, rehabilitation and promotion of healthy adaptation of patients and families will be explored in a variety of clinical settings.

N 445 Psych/Mental Health Nursing Practicum VI (3 units)
Clinical nursing practice in acute and community settings that provide mental health services for patients who may experience psychological stress, neurobiological disorders, and high risk situations.

N 446 Comm/Public Hlth Nursing Theory (3 units)
Foundation for community public health nursing care of patients, families, and communities. Sociocultural, political, and economic influences on a community’s health and the health care system are explored. Current issues and trends affecting community public health.

N 447 Comm/Public Hlth Practicum VI (3 units)
The application of nursing and epidemiological concepts to promoting health and preventing disease among patients, families, and communities. Intervention strategies focus on empowering clients with the necessary knowledge and skills to make informed and healthful choices.

FL 400: Introduction to Interpreting (Spanish/English) (3 units)
Prerequisite: passing score on SF State Bilingual Entrance Exam, (or passing the state or federal written exam) and admission to the program. This intensive introductory course is designed for students who want to develop their English/Spanish skills in the field of legal/court interpretation and the medical evaluation system of workers’ compensation. Following exercises to enhance memory and mental agility, students will learn interpreting theory. The fundamentals of simultaneous, consecutive and sight interpretation will be introduced with an emphasis on the criminal justice system and vocabulary development. This course is a comprehensive introduction to the language skills required to pass the state interpreter examinations.

FL 405: Consecutive Interpretation II (3 units)
Prerequisite: FL 403 This course provides advanced practice in the consecutive mode of interpretation in legal proceedings including pretrial hearings, preliminary examinations, motions and trials in state and federal courts, as well as depositions, medical/ psychiatric examinations and administrative hearings. Material is more complex than in FL 403. Emphasis is on extended recall, communicating nuances, maintaining register and equanimity in more demanding situations. In-class practice sessions are designed to improve memory, learn note-taking when appropriate and acquire relevant terminology.

FL 409: Simultaneous Interpretation I (3 units)
This course provides practice in simultaneous interpretation skills from English into Spanish in legal proceedings. Students practice with tape-recorded legal texts at a moderate to fast rate of speech.

Interpretation and analysis of financial statements for decision-making. Introduction to identification, measurement, and reporting of financial events of business entities.

Mktg 3401 Marketing Principles (4 units)
Introduction to marketing principles, functions, and methods in creating and delivering value; evolution of the modern marketing system; market structure; internal and external variables in the design of marketing program including product, price, promotion, and distribution; social, legal, and ethical responsibilities of marketing.

FALL QUARTER

HSC 3400 Individual and Community Mental Health (4 units)
An analysis of various concepts of mental health. The application of intervention techniques.

MGMT 4500 Business, Government, and Society (4 units)
The relationships between business managers and the social, economic, and political environment within which they operate; business ethics, antitrust policy, social responsibility, and consumer protection.

HDEV 4310 The Social Development of Children (4 units)
Theories, methods, and research findings in childhood social-emotional development from birth to age 12. Emotion and temperament, attachment, identity, achievement, gender roles, pro- and anti-social behavior, morality, peers, and the family.
