TRIO Upward Bound

Cañada College Upward Bound Program

Upward Bound is now accepting new students for fall 2010!

We are looking for students in grades 9-11th who want to be part of the Upward Bound community. For more information scroll down or contact the Upward Bound staff at (650) 306-3332

TRIO Upward Bound is a federally funded pre-college program designed to assist low-income and potential first generation to college students prepare for college.  In partnership with Sequoia High School, our program serves students in the communities of East Palo Alto and North Fair Oaks. Services provides to all students include; weekly afternoon tutorials, mentoring, college preparation workshops, supplemental instruction through the Saturday College program and the six-week summer program.

Our mission is to provide Upward Bound students the necessary preparation and opportunity to enter post secondary education and promote education, diversity, and community.

What Does the Upward Bound Program offer?

Academic Year Program

Weekly tutoring - Upward Bound tutors are available Monday - Friday from 2:00pm - 5:30pm at Sequoia High School room 306.

Saturday College - Saturday workshops are comprehensive and prepare students for academic success beyond high school. Students learn academic skills as well as gain insight and information on the college admissions process, requirements, and financial aid information.  Most importantly students get the motivation needed and confidence to reach their educational goals.

Saturday College takes place once a month. It begins in building 17-107 at 9:00am and will end at 2:00pm. Students are responsible for their transportation and are expected to arrive on time. Saturday College dates are as follows:

Advising - Upward Bound staff regularly monitors each participant's academic progress and grades. Staff members provide information and guidance on selecting high school courses that meet the CSU and UC systems requirements, as well as private colleges/universities.

Test preparation - Students receive practice for the PSAT, SAT, ACT and when needed preparation for the High School Exit Exams (CAHSEE).

College & Career Planning - Guest speakers are invited throughout the year to share their personal stories with the Upward Bound students. Guest speakers cover various topics such as personal challenges, different careers, and majors.

Academic Calendar

The Upward Bound Program is a year round program, offering Academic Year (traditional school year) workshops and tutoring at Sequoia High School and at Cañada College. During the summer Upward Bound provides a six week program offering academic courses, workshops, field trips and activities. All classes are taught on the Cañada College Campus. Our calendar provides key dates and times for Cañada College and Sequoia High School events and holidays.

Upward Bound Qualification

  • To meet basic eligibility requirements the applicant's family must meet income criteria established by the US government. http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/trio/incomelevels.html
  • The applicant must be the first generation to receive a four year college degree.
  • Participants must be a US citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Students must be in grades 9-11th and attending Sequoia High School and/or reside in Redwood City or East Palo Alto.
  • Selection is based on recommendations, grades, test scores, and interview.
  • In addition, students must demonstrate a desire to improve academically and interest in going to college after high school.

Selection Process

Due to the limited number of spaces, admission to the Cañada program is competitive. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements
The application process is as follows:

  • Submit a complete application and provide supplemental materials
  • Students interview with program Director or Program Services Coordinator
  • Parents are interviewed by the program Director
  • Notification is then sent to the family via mail

Student Application and supplemental materials are due by the proposed deadlines, which falls on October 30th for the Academic Year and May 1st for the Summer Program. If you have additional questions about the admissions process or selection, please contact the Upward Bound Office.

Upward Bound Application and Supplemental Materials

  • Application including 2 essay questions signed and completed.
  • 2 Teacher/Adult Recommendations (not a family member).
  • Copy of student's Social Security Card or Permanent Residency Card.
  • Copy of recent tax records.
  • Copy of recent progress report or grades.
