Resurgent Basketball Team Prepares for Conference Play

Colts have already stunned No. 4 San Jose City College.

The Cañada College basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 6, hosting Coast-North Division rival Chabot in a key conference game. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

The Colts enter the contest with an 8-4 record while Chabot is 10-3. On Friday the Colts will travel to Foothill. Foothill is 11-4 on the season.

Cañada has seen a remarkable turnaround under second-year coach Peter Diepenbrock. Cañada has already won more games this year than it did in the two previous seasons combined.

The Colts are led by two freshmen, Manny Martin and Peter Pappageorge. Martin is a 6-foot-5 forward from Fairfax in Los Angeles. He leads the conference in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game. Pappageorge, a 6-foot-1 shooting guard from Burlingame High School, was named the 2008-09 Daily Journal Boys' Basketball Player of the Year last season. Pappageorge is averaging 14.3 points per contest and scored a season-high 28 points earlier this season against Hartnell. Running the offense is steady sophomore point guard Bobby McCarthy of Serra High School.

"He's just making really good decisions and really embracing the point guard role," Diepenbrock said of McCarthy, one of his two sophomores.

As the Colts continue to win, they are beginning to build a formidable home court advantage. "It's great to see the fans responding to the success of the basketball team," said Linda Hayes, Dean of Business, Workforce, and Athletics.
