Benefits to student (skills and exposure to careers): provide service to peers through Safe Ride Program, gain leadership through Red Cross Club, increase communication skills and health and safety knowledge through outreach, trainings and presentations

Site looking for students interested in: health and safety education and outreach, providing service to peers

Education and age of desired intern/volunteer: High school: 14+ yrs; College: 18+ yrs.

Description of opportunity and duties:

HS students: can create Red Cross Club at school; volunteer for Safe Ride Program - providing rides on weekends for peers to avoid drunk driving fatalities; conduct health and personal safety related outreach and education;

College students: mentor high school students; conduct outreach and health education and training

Type of health care settings:

Experience type: Volunteer position

Duration and time of commitment: Flexible and dependent upon volunteer role and position description

Requirements and qualifications needed: 14 yrs.+ and a commitment to voluntary service and to the humanitarian mission and principles of the American Red Cross

Patient populations (i.e. children, seniors): Varies from children to adults with a focus on children K-7

Amount of patient contact: Some

Site’s prior experience with high school students: A lot of experience

Willingness to work with high schools: Yes

Liability issues (relevant if part of internship vs. job shadowing): Not applicable.
