Benefits to student (skills and exposure to careers): develop communication and client care skills, high level of contact with clients; learn about homelessness and working with children

Site looking for students interested in: learning about homelessness, working with children

Education and age of desired intern/volunteer: High school:    16 yrs.+    College:     18 yrs.+

Description of opportunity and duties: Volunteers may assist with activities for homeless children during afterschool program. Activities include: homework help, arts and crafts and outdoor sports and games.

Type of health care settings:

  • Alternative: Homeless shelter/transitional housing

Experience type: Volunteer position

Duration and time of commitment: Preferred commitment is at least 1 hour a week.  Shifts occur from 4:30-7:30pm on M-Th.

Application Process: 1) Contact Volunteer coordinator at mmcdonnell@shelternetwork.org, 2) Complete application, 3) Get TB test and Live Scan – will be reimbursed for the cost, 4) Meet with Children’s coordinator

Requirements and qualifications needed: 16 yrs.+, TB test, Livescan

Patient populations (i.e. children, seniors): Children

Amount of patient contact: Hgh level

Site’s prior experience with high school students: Some

Willingness to work with high schools: Yes

Liability issues (relevant if part of internship vs. job shadowing): Not relevant.
