Phlebotomy

Prerequisites:  None
Length of Program: 1 Semester
Description: The primary responsibility of a Phlebotomy Technician is to collect blood samples from patients or donors. The technician may also collect and transport laboratory specimens. The phlebotomy technician often works in direct contact with patients and therefore must work well with people and be able to communicate with patients that are under stress or nervous. Because this position works with needles and blood, safety, and professionalism are highly regarded.

Administrative Medical Assistant

Length of Program: 2 Semesters
Description: An Administrative Medical Assistant must be skilled in a variety of clerical tasks directly related to a medical environment such as a hospital, clinic, or doctor’s office. The medical assistant must have knowledge of insurance processing, billing/coding, medical records, scheduling, and general clerical skills such as answering phones, bookkeeping, data entry, and patient registration.

Medical Coding Specialist

Description: A Medical Coding Specialist is responsible for analyzing health records of patients and translating diagnoses into medical code. This position requires knowledge of anatomy and physiology, as well as an understanding of disease processes and treatment. The medical codes are then used in the processing of insurance and billing, but may also be used in medical research and medical studies.

Medical Transcription

Description: The primary function of a Medical Transcriptionist is to process hand-written notes, dictation, and voice recordings into text. Doctors and various healthcare professionals use handwriting, which is often full of abbreviations and often illegible, or voice recordings to report on medical cases and patient files. The medical transcriptionist is responsible for converting these hand-written and aural reports into typed or electronic documentation.

Radiologic Technology

Prerequisites: 2+ Semesters (6 courses)
Length of Program 7 Semesters (4 semesters + 3 summers)
Description The Radiologic Technology program is a high quality vocational program that trains students to become radiographers. These health care professionals perform diagnostic imaging examinations with the use of x-rays. They work directly with patients and physicians. Radiographers are educated in patient care, radiation safety, radiation protection, image and film processing, anatomy, physiology, patient positioning and examination techniques.

Nursing (BSN)

Prerequisites: 3+ Semesters
Length of Program: 5 Semesters (4 semesters + 1 summer) for Transfer
Description: TRANSFER PROGRAM - NURSING: Cañada College offers lower division coursework required for transfer in Nursing. Students should use PROJECT ASSIST to research lower division major requirements at the transfer destination(s) of their choice. Also, work with a Counselor/Advisor to determine appropriate transfer coursework.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING: Thanks to a unique partnership with San Francisco State University , Sequoia Healthcare District, and Sequoia Hospital, Cañada College offers a bachelor's degree in Nursing at the college's University Center. Not only will you earn your degree without leaving the local area but you'll have the opportunity to work at Sequoia Hospital upon graduation. This program is designed for San Mateo County residents who want to live, work, and study in the community.
