Traditional vs. Accelerated Path

If you have completed your placement test and have been placed in ENGL 827 or ENGL 826 and READ 826, you can choose to follow the traditional pathway or an accelerated pathway. This webpage is designed to help you make that decision.

The traditional path is either:
English 827 + English 847 + English 100 OR
English 826 and Reading 826 +
English 836 and Reading 836 + English 100

The accelerated path is either:
English 847 + English 100 OR
English 836 and Reading 836 + English 100

ENGL 827 (7 units)/ENGL 826 (4 units) + READ 826 (5 units) ENGL 847 (5 units)/ENGL 836 (4 units) + READ 836 (3 units)

Reading Requirements

At least one non-fiction book, plus a number of short readings at the introductory college level.

Introductory reading techniques, comprehension and vocabulary.

One or more non-fiction books, plus a number of additional readings at the intermediate college level.

Intermediate academic reading techniques, comprehension, vocabulary, and complex critical reading strategies.

Writing Requirements

4-6 text-based essays of 2-5 pages each (which may include an introduction to research methods).

Basic sentence combining, simple thesis development, basic outlines, quotation formatting and documentation.

4-6 text-based essays of 3-6 pages (which may include a research paper).

Intermediate to advanced sentence combining, simple to complex thesis development, outline forms, quotation formatting and documentation.

Student Performance Expectations

At least 14 - 18 hours of course work per week outside of class.

This course is designed to give students basic writing skills so that they can create clear, simple essays which will enable them to perform successfully in ENGL 847 or ENGL 836 and Read 836.

At least 10 - 14 hours of course work per week outside of class.

This course is designed to give students basic writing skills so that they can create clear, simple essays which will enable them to perform successfully in ENGL 100 (transfer-level English).
