COACHING STAFF

First pitch strikes, moving runners over, playing catch.  Doing all the little things that make a difference.  Team first. That's the rock-solid baseball philosophy Coach Tony Lucca teaches from the first workout in the fall to the last out of the season. “Were going to play a baseball version of the full court press.” “Were going to put pressure on our opponents as much as we can.” “We play an up-tempo, high speed game.”   Says Coach Lucca.

Coach Lucca knows first hand the virtues of this brand of baseball, playing ball in Mike Garcia’s system at Cañada in the mid-90’s when the Colts won the Coast Conference Championship. In 1995 Lucca led the  state in RBI (He still holds the Colts record for single-season batting average at .458).  As a player, coach Lucca was a Junior College All-American in 1996, attended Oklahoma State University on a Baseball scholarship and was named to the All Big 12 2nd team .  In 1998 Lucca signed with the Florida Marlins and played 3 years in that organization, earning MVP of the Class A Utica Blue Sox.  2009-2010 season is  Coach Lucca’s ninth year coaching at Cañada College.

If Coach Lucca is the brains of the Colts, then Coach Tony “Gomie” Gomes is the heart and soul of the staff.  The fiery first-base coach and hitting instructor is entering his 10th year with Cañada College. Coach Gomes instills hustle, pride and “Never-say-die” attitude in every player. Under Coach Gomes guidance the Colts have consistently maintained one of highest team batting averages in Northern California.

As a player Coach Gomes earned 1st Team All American honors in 1989 while playing at Cañada.  He then went on to star at San Francisco State and won the NABA world series in 2000 with the Reno Astros and led the Willow Glen A’s in hitting in 2003. Coach Gomes has served as hitting coach for such elite teams as the Anchorage Bucs and helped D! stars such as Brian Peterson become Alaska’s leading hitter. Tony is the proud father of  17 year old Anthony (soon to be a Colt) and daughter Alyssa age 14.

Communication, command, confidence, commitment. To say Coach Steve Hoff knows a little about pitching fundamentals is an understatement.  During his 6 year professional playing career Coach Hoff has recorded 345 innings, two All-star teams and strike out records.  Coach Hoff not only has a resume of success in professional baseball, but has distilled the philosophies of every coach who helped him along the way.

After winning the league title with Cañada in 1996, Coach Hoff signed with the San Diego Padres organization. Later Hoff was traded to the Marlins along with 1st baseman Derrick Lee for Right hander Kevin Brown.  Although his career was shortened by two arm surgeries, Coach Hoff’s professional experience has served him well in teaching young hurlers the keys to pitching success.  2010 will be Coach Hoff’s 7 year on the Colts coaching staff and has become one of the finest pitching coaches in the California JC system.  Coach Hoff resides in San Mateo with his wife Lisa and two daughters Hailey and Emily.

Coach Costello is entering his 4th season on the Colts coaching staff as the Catchers and Bench Coach. Coach Costello began his coaching career at South San Francisco High School. After coaching the Junior Varsity baseball team for three years, Coach Costello was then promoted to associate head baseball coach under the legendary  Coach Bob Brian.  While leading the squad at South San Francisco the program went on to win a league championship. Coach Costello is also a volunteer in several youth organizations throughout the Peninsula.

As a player, Coach Costello has won championships as well as all league honors. At Skyline College he was named to the All-Coast Conference team and was awarded MVP honors as well.  Coach Costello resides in San Carlos with his wife and two children.

The colts are very fortunate this year to have the services of the Colts staff’s newest addition, Ron Calloway.  Coach Calloway brings Major League experience to the coaching staff for 2010.  Coach Calloway was selected in the 8th round of the 1997 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Calloway went on to play in the Major Leagues for the Montreal Expos and Philadelphia Phillies.

Coach Calloway’s experience succeeding to the highest level of Professional Baseball makes him uniquely qualified to mentor the Colts as they pursue their own baseball careers.  Coach Calloway teaches the proper mental approach to the game. He is able to teach technique, and thinking.  “The key to success is understanding, not just hearing the same old phrases.”

Coach Jusino joins the Colts Coaching Staff this year as an assistant to Coach Hoff.  A former Colt, Coach “Duke” knows the Colts system and has already forged a bond with the Colts pitchers.
